Laugavegur huts for 2027 are sold by Ferðafélag Íslands (FÍ) as five-night packages running from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. FÍ publishes average opening windows, not a booking date or a road date. A third-party report said 2027 packages were visible by late August 2026, so check FÍ's booking tab from September and plan around its cancellation tiers.
The Laugavegur is a trail of about 55 kilometres from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. Ferðafélag Íslands (FÍ), the Iceland Touring Association, says it is most often hiked over four days. The walking is the easy part to picture. The hard part of planning is the beds. The huts on the route hold between 52 and 78 people each, and FÍ says they often sell out quickly, especially during the peak hiking season.
You will see it said that Laugavegur bookings open about nine months ahead. We could not confirm that from any official source, so this guide does not repeat it as fact. It separates three things: what FÍ publishes (packages, average windows per hut, cancellation rules), what the Icelandic Road Administration (Vegagerðin) decides (when each mountain road opens), and what has not been published for 2027 yet (the price grid, the road dates, the opening date). Viator does not sell the hut trek itself. Its products are day trips and glacier add-ons, and we place them where they fit.
What the 2027 season really depends on
The date you will see most often is 20 June. It comes from FÍ’s Landmannalaugar page: “On average one can assume to be able to drive to Landmannalaugar from June 20 until September 15.” Read that sentence closely. It is an average for car access to the highland base. It is not a road opening date.
The roads are the Icelandic Road Administration’s decision, taken road by road. Its own table for 2021 to 2025 shows how far apart the dates can be:
| Road section | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F208 Sigalda – Landmannalaugar | 12 June | 23 June | 1 June | 12 June | 23 May |
| F208 Landmannalaugar – Eldgjá | 1 July | 6 July | 16 June | 25 June | 19 June |
| F225 Landmannaleið (Dómadalur) | 18 June | 24 June | 9 June | 18 June | 11 June |
| F210 Keldur – Hvanngil | 9 July | 15 July | 23 June | 4 July | 14 July |
| F261 Emstruleið | 6 July | 15 July | 23 June | 26 June | 14 July |
Source: Vegagerðin, opening of mountain roads, read on 12 October 2026.
Across those five sections, the earliest opening was 23 May (the F208 from Sigalda to Landmannalaugar, in 2025) and the latest was 15 July (the F210 Keldur to Hvanngil and the F261, in 2022). The averages Vegagerðin gives for the F210 and F261 sections are the latest of the table, at 7 July and 5 July. Vegagerðin states the main factor in one line: “The state of snow cover is the most important factor on deciding when mountain roads can be opened to traffic.” Roads through protected land can wait longer still: “In cases where mountain roads pass through conservation areas, the roads may not be opened until the area as a whole is in a state to withstand the pressures of visitors.”
Landmannalaugar and Hrafntinnusker sit inside the Fjallabak nature reserve, according to Umhverfisstofnun, so that conservation rule can matter for the roads into them. Þórsmörk is missing from the table altogether. FÍ says its hut depends on the F249, and the F249 has no line of its own.
Build a margin into the start of your trip. The 20 June figure is an average for car access, and the sections that matter for your first hut nights can open weeks later than that. This is our editorial advice, not an official rule. When you arrive, check road conditions on umferdin.is or by calling 1777.
How FÍ sells the hut nights
FÍ sells the Laugavegur huts as packages. Its 2027 booking tab, read on 12 October 2026, lists five-night packages at 90,000 ISK per person. The “Cabins / Rented Tent” version costs 83,600 ISK for one person, or 79,600 ISK per person for two. The packages run one way, from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk.
Single nights work differently. The same page lists single nights for other FÍ huts, Nýidalur and Hornbjargsviti among them, but no single night for a Laugavegur hut, and no campsite was open for booking yet. FÍ is clear that you need a reservation before you set off: “Hikers are expected to have confirmed bookings for huts or campsites before starting their trek.”
So when do you book? Three sources give three answers, and none of them is a dated FÍ announcement:
- Rumbo Mundo reported on 28 August 2026 that FÍ “has opened bookings for 2027 accommodation packages on the Laugavegur Trail”.
- Atlas Iceland (14 March 2026) states: “Reservations open on 1st December each year for the following summer season.”
- The Laugavegur Trail Guide says hut availability “typically opens in the fall”.
We could not reconcile the 1 December date with packages visible in late August, so treat it as a lead, not a deadline. Watch FÍ’s booking tab from September and again in early December, and book as soon as your dates are firm. Demand is real: on 12 August 2026, 10Adventures wrote that Laugavegur was “mostly sold out in 2026”.
Cancellation: the road rule most guides miss
FÍ’s terms set the refund tiers for accommodation. These apply if your calendar changes.
| Days before arrival | Accommodation refund |
|---|---|
| 56 or more | 75% |
| 55 to 21 | 50% |
| 20 to 0 | 0% |
| Road to Landmannalaugar impassable | 100% of accommodation fees |
The last line matters most. FÍ’s terms say that if the road is impassable, “guests will receive a 100% refund of all accommodation fees.” That protects the hut money from the one date you cannot control. The terms we read cover that road case. For any other reason, read the cancellation page when you book, because we did not read the terms for other cases.
Two details change the arithmetic. Packages cancel as a whole, so one night inside a package is not refunded on its own. Campsite bookings are refunded in full up to two days before the first date, and not at all from one day before. Put the 56-day mark in your calendar on the day you book. Miss it and the refund drops from 75% to 50% in one step.
Refuge by refuge, from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk
Five FÍ huts sit on the standard route: Landmannalaugar, Hrafntinnusker, Álftavatn, Emstrur and Þórsmörk. Hvanngil is listed as an alternative stage. The table gives the places and FÍ’s average window for each. Those windows describe when the huts are normally open. They are not a booking calendar.
| Hut | Places | FÍ average window | How you arrive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landmannalaugar | 78 | 20 June to 15 September (car access) | F208 or F225 |
| Hrafntinnusker | 52 | 25 June to 16 September | On foot from the track |
| Álftavatn | 72 | 25 June to 17 September | F210, several unbridged rivers |
| Emstrur (Botnar) | 60 | 25 June to 18 September | F261, 4x4 track |
| Þórsmörk (Langidalur) | 73 | Early May to early October (depends on the F249) | F249, Krossá to cross |
Landmannalaugar is the start and the busiest base. Its car park had to be booked in 2026, for 20 June to 13 September, with arrivals between 9:00 and 16:00, at 1,500 ISK per car. The 2027 rule has not been published. Hrafntinnusker is reached on foot from the track, and its window depends on when the roads into the Fjallabak reserve open. Álftavatn is reached by the F210, where FÍ notes several rivers without bridges. Emstrur is reached by the F261, a 4x4 track. Þórsmörk has its own section below.
The five nights, in order
Our reading of FÍ’s 2027 package gives one night at each of five stops, in this order. We did not check every package variant, so confirm the exact list on the booking page before you plan around it.
| Night | Stop | Difficulty (our reading, not FÍ’s) | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Landmannalaugar | Starting point | F208 or F225 |
| 2 | Hrafntinnusker | Moderate to high: altitude, snow, fog | On foot |
| 3 | Álftavatn | Moderate: unbridged rivers | F210 track |
| 4 | Emstrur | Moderate: a canyon of the Markarfljót nearby | F261 |
| 5 | Þórsmörk | Final stage: rivers to cross | F249 |
The difficulty column is our editorial reading of the terrain. FÍ does not grade the trail. The points that recur across sources are altitude, snow and fog near Hrafntinnusker, unbridged rivers near Álftavatn, and the final crossings before Þórsmörk.
The last stretch: rivers and Þórsmörk
The last stage is the one the hut notes warn about most. FÍ’s Þórsmörk page says it is necessary to cross “many rivers, the last one being the infamous and often dangerous river Krossá”. The hut is usually open and manned from the beginning of May until the beginning of October, but access depends on the F249, the one road with no date in Vegagerðin’s table. FÍ also says camping is not permitted in Langidalur before 20 May, to protect the fragile vegetation.
FÍ is rebuilding the Skagfjörðsskáli hut at Þórsmörk and plans its inauguration for summer 2027. That is a plan, not a date. Ask FÍ whether the new building changes anything about your dates before you pay for your last night.
Rivers change plans faster than anything else. Andrew Skurka’s 2019 guide describes the Þröngá crossing near Langidalur as a place where your feet get wet, depending on conditions, and warns that the descent from Hrafntinnusker can be tricky in dense fog. Those are one author’s notes from 2019, not current reports, but they point the same way as FÍ’s warnings. Umhverfisstofnun’s rules for the Fjallabak reserve ask hikers to stay on the tracks and to camp only where it is allowed. Parts of that page are dated, so check the current version before you go.
In early September 2026, Icelandic Review reported gas pollution near Múlakvísl, a glacial river on the south coast, outside the Laugavegur. Its advice was to leave the area if you feel symptoms. It is a reminder that glacial rivers can change quickly, and that local warnings matter more than the weather forecast alone.
Getting to the trailheads
There are two ways in. By car, the access tracks are F-roads: mountain tracks that need a suitable vehicle. Read your rental contract before you go, because some rental policies exclude damage on F-roads.
By bus, the highland bus leaves from BSÍ in Reykjavík and takes about five hours to Landmannalaugar. A reseller lists it from €80 per person with flexible cancellation. We did not check the operator’s own fares. FÍ says several companies run buses during the hiking season, from late June to early September, but it does not name them on the pages we read, so compare before you book.
Budget: what FÍ publishes and what it does not
A 2027 night works out at about 18,000 ISK if you divide the 90,000 ISK package by five. That is our arithmetic, not a rate FÍ publishes. FÍ’s conditions name two validity periods, 1 May 2026 to 30 April 2027 and 1 May 2027 to 30 April 2028, and the price tables behind them are images we could not read. Budget with the package price, and check the grid before you pay.
The cabins-and-tent version saves 10,400 ISK per person against the hut package for two people (90,000 minus 79,600). Campsite pitches cost 3,400 ISK a day in 2026, against 17,000 for a hut place. No campsite was open for 2027 when we read the booking tab, so do not plan around one yet.
Who should book what
| Profile | Best fit | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| First-time hikers | The full five-night package, plus a day in the highlands before or after | Road dates and river crossings: add a buffer day |
| Couples on a budget | The cabins-and-tent package, 79,600 ISK each for two | No campsite was open for 2027 when we looked |
| Groups of six or more | Two bookings, since each booking holds up to six people | Packages cancel as a whole, so plan the split with that in mind |
| Families | Children aged 7 to 17 pay the reduced fare at Landmannalaugar (8,500 ISK in 2026); children aged 6 and under go free | The 2027 fare grid is not readable yet |
| Travellers without a car | The highland bus from BSÍ, about five hours | Bus services run in the season, which FÍ places from late June to early September |
Viator day trips and glacier add-ons
No Viator product sells the Laugavegur as a multi-day hut trek. Our Viator search covered 298 products in Iceland and five free-text queries, and none covers the hut trek. What Viator does sell is what people add around it: a day in the same highlands, a glacier walk, or a first day in Reykjavík. The cards below are complements, not substitutes for the huts.
The prices are for two adults, in euros, for dates between 20 June and 15 September 2027, as checked on 12 October 2026. Availability can shift, so confirm your date on the product page.
Landmannalaugar in a day, from Reykjavík or Hella
A small-group day in the highlands, with hot springs on the route. It runs about 13 hours, and morning pickups in Reykjavík start at 6:30. Lunch is not included. Free cancellation is offered up to 24 hours before departure, according to the product listing.
Þórsmörk on a day tour
A day tour gives you the valley without carrying a pack. It lasts about seven hours, and food, drinks and gratuities are extra. It does not run every day: in the sampled window, 51 of 88 days were open, so check your date before you assume a Þórsmörk day fits around your hut nights.
Þórsmörk, private
If you want the valley to yourself, the private option takes about 11 hours and was open on 87 of the 88 sampled days. Wi-fi is on board, and dinner is not included. It costs considerably more, at €2,117.40 for two adults on the same window.
Glacier walk from Skaftafell
Skaftafell is the base for a guided walk on an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. The walk lasts about 3.5 hours, and all the glacier gear is provided. Food and gratuities are extra. If the glacier side of your trip is the main draw, our Iceland crystal ice cave guide covers a different glacier experience, the crystal ice cave season.
Glacier walk at Sólheimajökull
Sólheimajökull is the most reviewed glacier walk on our shortlist, with 900 reviews. The walk lasts about 3.5 hours, and the meeting point is about 2.5 hours’ drive from Reykjavík. Crampons, a harness, an ice axe and a helmet are supplied. Hiking boots and rain gear are not included, so bring your own.
Two days, private, with a glacier hike and the lagoon
This is the high-end option. A private two-day trip, about 48 hours, includes a glacier hike on Falljökull, the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, Reynisfjara beach and the Jökulsárlón lagoon according to the product title. Breakfast is included. Its cancellation terms are stricter than the day tours: a full refund if you cancel at least six full days before departure, 50% between two and six days out, and nothing within two days.
Your first day in Reykjavík
A two-hour small-group walk around central Reykjavík, starting at the Leifur Eiríksson statue in front of Hallgrímskirkja. It is a practical way to use an arrival day, and it is the most reviewed product on this list, with 5,254 reviews at 4.93. Drinks and gratuities are not included.
Mistakes that cost hikers a night
- Treating 20 June as the day the road opens. It is an average for car access.
- Expecting a Viator product to cover the trek. None does.
- Looking for single nights in the Laugavegur huts. On the 2027 page we read, only packages were listed.
- Missing the 56-day cancellation mark and losing a quarter of the accommodation refund.
- Arriving without a sleeping bag or food. Third-party guides say the huts have kitchens with gas stoves but serve no meals.
- Assuming Þórsmörk is unchanged. The hut is being rebuilt, and its 2027 inauguration is planned but not dated.
Checklist before you book
- Check FÍ's booking tab for 2027 from September, and again in early December
- Book the five-night package, since single Laugavegur nights were not listed
- Put the 56-day cancellation mark in your calendar on the day you book
- Check the 2027 Landmannalaugar car park rule on parka.is before you drive
- Check road conditions on umferdin.is or by calling 1777 in the weeks before you leave
- Keep 112 for emergencies; SafeTravel (safetravel.is) has trip-planning tools
What we could not confirm
We are not presenting these as facts yet:
- The opening date for 2027 bookings, or any official FÍ announcement with a date.
- The 2027 opening dates for the F208, F225, F261 and F249 roads. These are decided by Vegagerðin and were not published when we checked.
- The 2027 price grid, which FÍ publishes as images we could not read.
- The summer 2027 inauguration of the Þórsmörk hut, which is a plan.
- The state of the roads and huts in 2026. The season has closed, and we read no 2026 road notice from Vegagerðin.
The questions in the FAQ are derived, not measured. Google returned no search suggestions for this topic when we checked, so they come from the points where the sources leave gaps or disagree. We also left out the 85%, 50% and 25% refund scale that circulates in search extracts. It does not match FÍ’s own terms page, and FÍ’s page is the one you will be held to.
Practical info
FAQ
When do Laugavegur hut bookings open for 2027?
No official opening date had been published when we checked on 12 October 2026. FÍ's 2027 booking tab already lists five-night packages, and Rumbo Mundo reported on 28 August 2026 that they were open. Atlas Iceland says reservations open on 1 December each year, but FÍ has not confirmed that date. Check FÍ's booking tab from September and again in early December.
Can I book single nights in the Laugavegur huts?
On the 2027 booking tab we read on 12 October 2026, the Laugavegur huts were listed only as five-night packages. Single nights appeared for other FÍ huts, such as Nýidalur and Hornbjargsviti. Packages also cancel as a whole, so one night inside a package is not refunded on its own. Confirm the current list on FÍ's site before you plan around it.
Can I hike the Laugavegur from Þórsmörk to Landmannalaugar?
The packages we read run one way only, from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. One third-party source describes a booking from north to south, but we could not confirm that on an open FÍ page. If you want to reverse the route, ask FÍ before you book, because the order of the stages decides which hut you sleep in on each night.
When does the road to Landmannalaugar open?
No one can give a fixed date in advance. FÍ publishes an average: car access to Landmannalaugar is assumed from 20 June to 15 September. The Icelandic Road Administration (Vegagerðin) sets the real date road by road. Between 2021 and 2025 its openings ranged from 23 May (the F208 from Sigalda, in 2025) to 15 July (the F210 Keldur to Hvanngil and the F261, in 2022). Check umferdin.is or call 1777 before you leave.
What happens if the road is closed when I arrive?
FÍ's terms say that if the road to Landmannalaugar is impassable, guests receive a 100% refund of all accommodation fees. The refund covers accommodation only, so check transport costs with each provider. For any other reason to change your dates, we did not read the applicable terms, so check the cancellation page when you book.
How do the cancellation fees work?
For accommodation, FÍ refunds 75% if you cancel 56 days or more before arrival, 50% between 55 and 21 days out, and nothing in the last 20 days. Packages cancel as a whole. Campsite bookings are refunded in full up to two days before the first date, and not at all from one day before. Put the 56-day mark in your calendar the day you book, because missing it cuts the refund from 75% to 50%.
How much does the Laugavegur hut trek cost in 2027?
FÍ lists the 2027 five-night package at 90,000 ISK per person. Dividing by five gives about 18,000 ISK a night, which is our arithmetic, not a published rate. The cabins-and-tent package costs 79,600 ISK per person for two people. FÍ's 2027 price grid is an image we could not read, so check it before you pay, and add the shower and parking costs.
Do I need a 4x4 to reach the trailheads?
Access to Landmannalaugar, Álftavatn and Emstrur runs over mountain F-roads, which need a suitable vehicle. Check your rental contract before you drive, because some rental policies exclude damage on F-roads. Taking the highland bus from Reykjavík avoids the question: it runs from BSÍ to Landmannalaugar in about five hours, according to a reseller's listing.
